単なる漁村であったマカオに1,513年にポルトガル人が渡来し、1,557年に当時の明からマカオへの居留が認められた。
その後450年近く、マカオの歴史はポルトガルの統治となる。
マカオの行政管理権は1999年12月20日に中華人民共和国へ返還され、マカオを特別行政区にすることになった。
