ウズベキスタン最大の観光都市・サマルカンド（Samarkand）。
“サマル”とは「人々が出会うこと」、“カンド”は「町」を意味し、その名の通り、古くからオアシス都市であったこの町は世界中の人々が行き交い文化が交差するシルクロードの要衝として繁栄しました。
しかし、13世紀に入ると、チンギス＝ハーン率いるモンゴル帝国の襲撃に遭い町は滅亡、やがて14世紀末に英雄ティムールが現れ、町は再び帝都として復活を遂げていきます。
現在、サマルカンドを象徴する「青の都」の壮麗なモスクや建築群はこのティムール王朝以降のものであり、これらは「サマルカンド－文化交差路」として世界遺産にも登録されています。
