マハラーシュトラ州中部の町・オーランガバードの近郊に、インドが誇る珠玉の２つの遺産が残されている。
インドで最高の仏教壁画が残るアジャンタ石窟。
紀元前200年頃から紀元後650年頃の造営とされているが、仏教の衰退とともに1819年に「発見」されるまで忘れ去られていた。
そのため、時を越えた素晴らしい壁画が残されている。
もう一つはエローラ石窟群。
古代三大宗教「仏教・ヒンドゥー教・ジャイナ教」の石窟寺院が一同に会する世界で唯一の場所。
6～10世紀にかけて開窟された、の石窟が互いに破壊し合うことなく、南北2Kmに及んで集結した大遺跡群です。
