おもにフランス各地からピレネー山脈を経由しスペイン北部を通る道を指す。
サンティアゴ・デ・コンポステーラには、聖ヤコブ（スペイン語でサンティアゴ）の遺骸があるとされ、ローマ、エルサレムと並んでキリスト教の三大巡礼地に数えられている。
