本日は第123弾として、標記のテーマを公開しました。

ナンマトル（Nan Madol）は、ミクロネシア連邦のポンペイ州に残る人工島群の総称であり、後述するように、その考古遺跡の規模はオセアニア最大とさえ言われる。

人工島が築かれ始めたのは西暦500年頃からだが、ポンペイ島全土を支配する王朝（シャウテレウル王朝）が成立した1000年頃から建設が本格化し、盛期を迎えた1200年頃から1500年（または1600年）頃までに多数の巨石記念物が作り上げられていった。

本日で「オセアニアの世界遺産」は終了です。次回は最多の数（56件：2021年現在）を誇る「中国の世界遺産」の予定です。
