古典ギリシア語読みではエペソス, ,エフェソ, ,エペソとも表記され、現在はトルコ語でエフェス(in Japanese history)Efes）とも呼ばれる。

アルテミス崇拝で知られたギリシア人都市であったが、のちにキリスト教を受容し、新約聖書にもエフェソの信徒への手紙がある。
