masada(Hebrew: ) מצדה‎) is the site of the First Jewish War and the ruins of a castle in eastern Israel, near the western shore of the Dead Sea.

Masada" means "fortress" in Hebrew.

It was built around 120 B.C. on a sheer rocky hill rising out of the desert by the Dead Sea, and was later renovated by Herod the Great as a detached palace.

There is only one narrow trail, called the "snake trail," to the summit, which is surrounded by sheer cliffs and was said to be impregnable.
