The maze of Chinatown.
The Hainan chicken rice, noodles, and satay served on the narrow streets of Chinatown Food Street are excellent.
The area is dotted with souvenir stores and independent boutiques selling clothing, crafts, and antiques.
There are also many fashionable wine bars on Club Street.
There are also cultural facilities such as the Sri Mariaman Temple, built in 1827, and the splendid Futsang Temple Long Hua Yuan Museum.
A decade ago, one could walk anywhere in Singapore and feel the atmosphere of Chinatown.
However, under the name of "urban redevelopment," the city underwent a major transformation, and the name "Chinatown" is now only used for the area south of the Singapore River, centered on New Bridge Road and South Bridge Road.
In Chinatown, which I now visit, the old-fashioned decaying shophouses have been torn down, and I see tourist shophouses that give the impression of brightly colored haribo.
The people who have lived in this town have moved to high-rise residences, and the distinctive smell of life in Chinatown seems to have faded.
However, it is still the city where you can experience Chinese power and culture more than anywhere else.
