The Historic Centre of Naples is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Naples, Italy.
The origins of Naples date back to its founding as a Greek colony around 470 BC.
The town's name at the time was Neapolis, meaning new city, and it is believed to have been developed according to an orderly urban plan laid out in a grid pattern.
Earthquakes in 62 AD and 79 AD caused serious damage to Naples, but it was rebuilt.
In the 11th century, the Norman dynasty of Hauteville invaded and took control of Naples, which then came under the rule of the Hohenstaufen dynasty.
In the 13th century, the Angevins established the Kingdom of Naples here, and Naples began to flourish.
With the decline of the Angevins in the first half of the 16th century, Naples came under Spanish rule.
From the 18th century onwards, it was ruled by the House of Bourbon, but was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy in 1860, after which it was slower to modernise than other cities and fell into decline.
