ユーラシア大陸の西半分で見ても最大である。
北はユングフラウに、南はマッサ川の峡谷群を経由してローヌ川に、東はメルジェレン湖に、西はアレッチホルンにそれぞれ囲まれている。
ユネスコの世界遺産委員会は、2001年にアレッチ氷河を世界遺産に登録した。
