Agra FortressAgra Fort आगरा का किला
The Yamuna River flows through northern India.
Agra Castle, which stands on the west bank of the river, was the residence of the emperors of the Mughal Empire, which flourished for about 300 years from the 16th century.
The Agra Castle, built by the third emperor Akbar after he moved the capital from Delhi, is called the "Red Castle" because it was constructed using red sandstone produced in the region.
The red color was also a symbol of the emperor's mighty power.
In 1565, Emperor Akbar began construction of the Agra Castle, and despite being a Muslim dynasty, he sought to reconcile with other religions by marrying a Hindu queen.
The Jahangir Palace, built within the castle for his legitimate son, is a fusion of Islamic and Hindu architecture, with chhatris crowning both ends of the upper part of the symmetrical facade and reliefs on the pillars and beams that look like wood carvings.
The pure white color of many of the buildings in the castle is due to his grandson, the fifth emperor "Shah Jahan".
The emperor, who is also known for building the Taj Mahal, transformed the Agra Castle into a graceful structure by constructing a series of elegant buildings inlaid with white marble and precious stones, including the Hall of Public Audience, the Moti Masjid (Pearl Mosque), and the emperor's bedchamber.
His son, the sixth emperor "Aurangzeb," completed Agra Castle as a solid fortress with a 20-meter-high wall that stretched 2.5 km around the city.
Agra Castle was extended, remodeled, and reinforced with each new emperor.
The powerful and splendid fortress, composed of opposing colors of red and white, is a vivid reminder of the power of the Mughal emperors who ruled over the city.
