バラナシの概要
インド最大の聖地である同市には、ガンジス川の聖なる水での沐浴や、葬儀を行うヒンドゥー教の巡礼者が多く集まります。
町の曲がりくねった道沿いには、ヒンドゥー教のシヴァ神に捧げる「黄金寺院」のカシー ビッシュワナス テンプルをはじめとする 2,000 ほどの寺院があります。

日本から行く場合はデリー経由で飛行機や鉄道で行くのが一般的である。

バラナシ駅付近まで40分程度であるが、その南側の市街地は道が非常に混雑する。

バラナシ近辺には鉄道の駅が4つある。それぞれ、

- ムガル・サラーイ駅(Mughal Sarai Railway Station)
- バラナシ・シティー駅(Varanasi City Railway Station)

長距離列車が発着するのはバラナシ・ジャンクション駅とムガル・サラーイ駅である。
アグラまで特急で8-12時間、デリーまで特急で約9-12時間、コルカタまでは約13時間、ムンバイまでは約28時間。
2019年2月17日、最高速度160km/hを誇る車両を用いたバンデバラト・エクスプレスが運転を開始。
バラナシとニューデリー間が8時間で結ばれることとなった。

How to get there by bus from Delhi
バラナシの大きなバス停は、鉄道のバラナシ駅近くにある。
安くすむバス移動だが、デリーからは約16時間ほどかかり遅延の可能性があるので注意。
夜17時〜21時頃にデリーを出発し、朝の9時〜11時頃にバラナシに到着する夜行バスが主流。
ネット予約は、 Redbus , , Busindia , , Ixigo などのサイトを通してできる。
所要時間や座席のグレード、電源やアメニティの詳細などを料金と照らし合わせてみると良い。
バラナシまでの道のりは長いため、座席ごとに仕切りがあるタイプのバスが多い。

ガンジス河周辺は車での通行ができないため、基本的に移動はリクシャーです。
しかし、バラナシ空港から旧市街の大通りまでアクセスする場合は、タクシーが利用できる。
空港からは prepaid cab （Rs.700前後）や シェアタクシー （Rs.200前後）が利用できる。
市内から利用する場合は、大きなレストランやホテルなどで呼んでもらいましょう。
また、車の利用はあまり主流ではないため、エアコンが付いていないタクシーもある。
長時間の乗車になる場合は、あらかじめ確認しておくと安心。
