Orchard Road Overview

Orchard Road is Singapore's commercial center, with discount outlets, department stores, and upscale boutiques, in addition to luxury hotels.

Emerald Hill Road offers a mix of colorful Chinese Baroque homes and casual pubs, and nearby Cappage Terrace has outdoor bars and restaurants.

The Newton Food Center is a popular gourmet hub where you can get everything from grilled and barbecued seafood to traditional desserts.

Until the 19th century, this area was the site of orchards growing nutmeg and other crops.

This is said to be the reason for the name "orchard.

At that time, it was a suburb of a small city, an upscale residential area where wealthy Europeans and Chinese had mansions.

It was a colonial-style mansion with a large garden and lush orchards surrounding it.

About 40 years ago, then Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew advocated turning Orchard Road into a major shopping center, and since that time the orchards have disappeared and the colonial mansions have disappeared.

Instead, shopping centers featuring goods from all over the world lined the streets, and huge hotels stood in the forests.

The government's policy of "making everything new" has been successfully realized on Orchard Road.
