Chiang Mai Overview

Muang Chiang Mai is a county located in the mountainous region of northern Thailand.

The region is home to Chiang Mai, a major city built in the 13th century.

Located about 720 kilometers north of Bangkok, Thailand's second largest city, Chiang Mai, is a beautiful old city also known as the "Rose of the North.

It was built in 1296 by King Mengrai, the first king of the Lanna dynasty, on the banks of the Ping River as a new capital, and was named "New City" in the northern Thai language.

The old city still retains its walls and moats, remnants of a time when Chiang Mai was the center of culture and religion.

There are numerous temples in Muang Chiang Mai District and Chiang Mai City, including the 14th century Wat Phra Singh and the 15th century Wat Chedi Luang, decorated with sculptures of the snake god.
