イギリス南部の、ドーセット州からデヴォン州東部まで延びる海岸線一帯は、2億5千万年前から始まる三畳紀から、ジュラ紀、白亜紀へと続く中生代の地層が、連続して見られる世界で唯一の場所です。
ジュラシック・コートとも呼ばれているが、「ドーセットと東デヴォンの海岸」という名称で世界遺産になっている。
長い海岸線には崖がせり出していますが、地層の色は場所によって白や黄色、赤、茶色、灰色と様々です。
